Gary
Jackson Military History:
I enlisted in the Navy, yes the Navy, March 1964 and served in
Viet Nam in 1966. In October 1966 I returned home and then transferred
to the USAF. I was in the USAF from 1966 through November 1973.
I arrived Bentwaters 20 November 1969 and departed 21 October
1973, at which time I was being discharged from the service,
at my request. I arrived Bentwaters as a Sgt and later made SSgt.
I was assigned to the 91TFS, B-flight as a Crew Chief and worked
the flight line prior to my last three months, at which time
I was assigned to the 81 Security Police Squadron under "Project
Transition." This was to help you find work after the service.
I joined the Police Squadron because I wanted to be a police
officer, which I became for a time.
My daughter was born at RAF Lakenheath, 8 December 1970. She kept
her dual-citizenship until she turned 18 years of age.
Bentwaters was a very big part of my life with a lot of good memories.
I am proud to say I was there.
Thanks for your help!

I thoroughly enjoyed my time there!
Spent a lot of time working and playing at the Rod and Gun Club.
Manager was Mr. B. Ken Missen.
Other names that came flooding back were Patti Lewandowski, Jim
Smith, Danny Kimbro, Marshall Chaplain, Bob Campbell. Also Maj.
Keithe Nelson, who ret as a Major General.
Local folks were Doug Leggett, D.D. Dodd, Wally Sykes and I can
see a lot of faces in my memory, but can't come up with the names
now.
Guys in the radio shop that I worked with were TSGT Robert Ivester,
SSGT Clement Coward, SGT Esteban Corona. A crew chief on the 130's
was Bill Durtschi.

I am looking for Dave Watts, he was from Yuma az, no contact since
1980, last seen him at RAF Bentwaters in 1980,

I was assigned to the twin bases, but spent most of my time on
"Woody".
I was on TSgt Chester Horton's flight "C" Flight for
the first year I was in country.
I would like to hear from anyone who was assigned to the Squadron
during that time frame.
I am looking for Dennis Huff, Chris Redman, Jon Biddle or any
of the "C" Flight crew.
It would be nice to hear from Col Oliver D. Towns also.

I am interested in contacting former members of the 67th ARRS
who were stationed at RAF Woodbridge while I was there.
I have had some luck locating a few members of the squadron, but
would like to know what became of my two squadron commanders:
Col Stanley Maratos and Col. Donald Jensen.
Also trying to locate a former supervisor Lt. Minot Gailliard.
Would like to share memories and photos with any of the old (and
we are getting older!!) gang. The 67th was the best assignment
I ever had!

Bentwaters Woodbridge December 73 - December 75
Arrived an A1C December 10th, 1973, to Sgt circa Aug 1975
F-4D Phantom (66-620) crewchief 81st OMS (Organizational Maintenance
Squadron) Flightline Mechanic
circa Jan 75 - Aug 75 Alert Force Flightline Crewchief
Now: PO Box 36, Hinsdale, New York 14743
Stationed at Bentwaters right out of Tech School... Arrived at
Crooked Creek during an ORI (Operational Readiness Inspection)
Was astounded by the size of the F-4 Phantoms when first saw them.
Spent most of 2 years at Twin-Base complex working swing shift
heavy maintenance (tires, flight controls, external fuel tanks)
First trainer Rick Mayer?, Flightline Chief MSgt Hand.
Best friends were "Mr. Lewis" a Staff Sgt who I enjoyed
working with tremendously and had a ball driving around the perimeter
in his VW Bug with dim headlights at breakneck speeds to get to
midnite chow and "Smitty's Banana Pancakes....YUMMMM YUMMMM
JJ Johnson was another good friend who transferred to George AFB
California after I did and was directly responsible for me getting
my drivers license.
Took flying lessons from Chris Crowther? at Woodbridge Aero Club....yes,
flying before I had a drivers license.
Chris returned to crop dusting after I transferred out I was told....
Loved the area and will always regret not having a car to get
around. I did attend many airshows (including Farnborough) and
air museums by charter bus. Only made it to London once (actually
drove thru by bus) but saw Piccadilly Circus, Tower of London
and Big Ben.
I was assigned to the 92nd TFS and remember "my pilot"
Lt. J.C. Meyer yelling across the dispersal ramp for me when his
plane had some problems. I saw him once years later at George
AFB when he was getting checked out in the aging F-105. Don't
think he remembered me.
I was also present the day the Queen, both Princesses and the
Duke stopped at Bentwaters on their way to Ipswich to dedicate
the Post Office there. Have some nice photos of them all.
Would love to converse with anyone else there in the years I was
stationed there. Maybe talk about the TDY's to Aviano Italy. I
have been back to Aviano 3 times with the NY Air National Guard
since then and there is NOTHING the same except the Transient
Alert shack.
I get so "homesick" for Bentwaters sometimes.

Ray Winn ramwin2(a)msn.com,Bentwaters/Woodbridge
1968-1978, Civilian, Member of the Tunetwisters
During this time I worked at the Dining Hall, Stars&Stripes
bookstore briefly, and worked for AAFES from 1970-78.
I was the first Manager of the Bentwaters Sound Center (through
the Deli, Furniture Store, all the way in the back, tall guy with
glasses, that's me).
I also played lead guitar for several C&W bands.
You might remember the "Tunetwisters" at the NCO Club
and the Woodbridge All-Ranks Club.
I've got many fond memories of those times. Cheers and all the
best. Ray Winn.
The Tunetwisters were formed by Chuck Bailey, who was Bandleader,
big daddy, organizer, mentor, leader, nursemaid, and chief Buttkicker
to us all.
The
other members were Chuck Conley, Chris Kallenback(sp.?), Duane
Booth, Mel Tindle, Rick Welch, and me. We occasionally were
joined by Bob Haskell, Tony Smart, Ron Reed, and Pete Harvey as
sidemen.
[Linn B.: I am interested that there was no mention
of Clyde Clevenger, who emailed me to say that he played
in a band of that name]
We did make two LP's at Hillside Records in Ipswich
around 1975. I wonder if you could find out if they are still
in business? I tried searching on the 'net but didn't score. It
was owned and operated by Richard and David Allison at Levington
Road, IPS. They were a brand new studio and I think we were their
first venture. It went well.
I stayed in touch with Chuck B. for a while after I returned to
US but then lost contact. It would be great to hear from any of
them. It's also nice to hear from someone in Woodbridge.
