Linn:
I sent your email of the base housing on to my daughter Lisa. She and my son John said the tour in England was the best years of their lives. They absolutely loved it and it gave me a chance to go home to Manningtree and see my friends and family.

We all loved that last tour over there as my husband Damien was going to retire after that and go to Law School which he did; and was still working as an LA City Attorney Prosecutor when he died in 1999. He always said he had the best of both worlds but the flying, the locale, the people... don't know what it was but it was the experience of a lifetime and I'm still in touch with some of my old friends.

Talking to Tom Cairns again has been a hoot. We get on the phone and just about go through every little bit of trivia from those years and what a laugh we had. Sorry to say that so many have passed away now. Andrew Patton went back to Australia and died waiting for a new heart; Big John Weichert died about 6 yrs ago. So that was the last of the 3 bachelors from Christchurch Cottage in Ipswich to pass away... Boy if only that place could talk!

The 79th troops I think have kept in fairly close contact so we've been able to keep up with a lot of them. Marty Bailey lives in Florida since Fred passed. I'm still hoping that someone will know where Pat Hicks is now. I don't know what her maiden name was and she did remarry another American from Bentwaters when she went back there. She was good friends with one of the telephone operators named Cynthia (last name Foster?). Pat was a Sophia Loren look-alike... just gorgeous with green eyes and the lovely personality to go with the looks. I'm surprised no one knows where she is now unless she is back in the States again.

Like Tom... I love to know where Dusty Miller went? In 1975 when I was last there he had his own pub on the main road to the bases; just before you went round the corner and crossed the railway tracks. [that'll be the Wilford Bridge, or maybe the Station Inn - Linn B.]

Anyone remember Pearl and Yvonne Myhill? Their dad was PC Myhill in Ipswich and he would put the fear of God into anyone who came near his daughters. Pearl and I were hairdressers at Jarmans Hair Salon in the mid fifties. Pearl married Lyle (Mac) McPherson from the Air Police Sqd. Mac is a very successful developer now and he and Pearl spend their time between Florida and West Virginia.

I recognize so many of the names and look forward to hearing more. I saw a post from someone looking for a group of people he was stationed with. One of the "lost" friends was Wimpey Thayer. He was married to June Patterson and they too have passed on a long time ago.

I just talked to Tom's wife Vickie a few minutes ago and she said Tom is home in record time and doing very well.

I think I've rambled on enough. Feel free to include any of these meanderings down Memory Lane! [I've included them all! - Linn B.]

I was sorry to hear that Glady's had passed away . She was a sweet lady. Would love to know what Walter (Scoop) O'Toole is doing, as well as that tall Texan from Bentwaters, Bill Turner and if he still loves to ride Motor Cycles like the one he crashed at Maningtree on his way over to see me years ago!!

Thanks so much for all your efforts with this project.
You know we all appreciate it.
Best Wishes
Dawn Williams

My boss, a GS-12 or maybe a GS-16 Mr. Conti, used to bum a ride from me everyday and never gave me a dime for gas. "The passenger seat was going to the base regardless of if he was in it or not, so why should he pay?"
Many regards to all that were at Bentwaters/Woodbridge.

My dad TSgt James D. (Jim) Dockens & family, were stationed at Woodbridge/Bentwaters from about 1969-1972. We lived in both of the villages of Hollesley and Grundisburgh in Suffolk. I am looking for both American kids that I went to school with (would have been middle school age) and British friends from either of these villages.
On the Base, we hung out with Jim Thompson, Patty Norris, Matt, Rusty and Jonathan Goode.
In the village of Hollesley, we lived in a big, two story, red brick house. I remember sisters, Elaine & Julie Leonard, Joy and Deanne Smith, Andrew, Christopher and brother Robbie.
In the village of Grundisburgh, I would love to make contact with Adrian Frost, who always wore a black leather jacket, with long blonde hair and loved the Elvis song Burnin Love...
Please email me if you know the whereabouts of any of these people now. One of my fondest memories was when the Fish and Chips wagon would come on a cold winter's night and we would all go down to the village green and buy fish and chips with salt & vinager, wrapped in newspaper. From: Wharton, Thomas W Civ USAF
Email:Thomas.Wharton(at)HILL.af.mil

Greetings all, WoW – where does the time go?

I too (then, SSgt. Tom Wharton) was also stationed at the RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge bases from Jan 1977 to Jan 1980.

Sgt Tom Wharton, working on an F-4D PhantomI was initially an F4D aircraft Crew Chief (78th FS) at Woodbridge and Bentwaters, then I was moved over to the Bentwaters side of the base where I continued to ‘crew” F4’s, about a year later we all converted to the A-10 aircraft but that first year was very exciting, lots of flying, deploying and exercises.

Soon the A-10 aircraft conversion took place, I was again assigned as an A-10 Crew Chief for one year (91st FS) reassigned to the Bentwaters side of the base. I soon volunteered and was picked up to be assigned to the Maintenance Operations (old Job Control) Center as a Squadron, Board Controller for the Bentwaters (91st) side of the base.

I was there and remember that terrible night in April 1978 when the F4 Fuel Barn (on Phase Row) blew up due to that “static electricity accident” that killed that young Airman, I remember how bravely some of the folks involved in that event fought to try and save lives and control that fire, it was a terrible night for all folks involved. One year earlier (within the first year of my arrival) I myself was involved in a serious aircraft (accident) fire which I and a good friend (who worked with me as a fellow Crew Chief, SSgt Roger Tingley) managed to extinguish a serious fire without loss of life (see attachment) that was a hell’va an afternoon too, I’ll never forget it.

However, on a happier note, I truly enjoyed all my time at that installation, our deployments, hard work and exercises which was part of being in USAFE and the Cold War. I still think of Bentwaters and the U.K. often with very fond memories, I really enjoyed the English countryside, the pubs and all around site seeing experience I had, the folks and country were a wonderful experience. I just wanted to say “hello” to all those who shared in many of the same experiences I did while assigned to this great location, best of luck to all in future.

Signed Tom Wharton, USAF Retired SMSgt (1969 to 1996).

Worked first under MSgt Ralph Snyder, then MSgt Ernest D. ("Hoppy") Hopson; also with Sgt Perry Shumard. Lived off-base in Ipswich (50B Constable Road), with my wife, across the street from MSgt Larry Saxe, his wife Sandra and 2 kids. At the beginning and end of my tour, I lived in the barracks. I had a great time in the UK; had a lot of opportunities to travel into London and all around England and Scotland.

Along with "flying a desk", I remember doing sentry duty along the fence at Woodbridge during "alert" excercises. I remember it was remarkable that we had loaded M-16s, while troops that had been in Viet Nam said they never had ammunition in their's (afraid someone might get shot).

Suprised not to see any reference to "Hoppy". Was wondering if he left "under a cloud", as he basically "stole" the wife of another NCO and was otherwise a "wild & crazy guy".

I also remember Capt. Elaine Bailey, OIC of the Awards & Decs unit; and Ina Phillips, who worked as a civilian in Supply (I think) ... one of the rare black women on base.

Other guys who served in the military at that time, especially in the Army or Marines, hardly credfit what we did as "military service" at all. Well, tough to them! Whose fault is that?!

UPDATE from my previous post of 9/18/2003: NEW EMAIL address posted (above).
I'm interested in re-establishing contact with anyone who may have had contact with me or my family during our years on the twin bases. My father is Col. Jarrell (Jerry) S. Mitchell, USAF, ret., and my mother is Patricia (Pat) Mitchell. My only sibling is my brother, John E. Mitchell. We lived on RAF Bentwaters from 08/76 - 09/77, in the duplex officers quarters on the far west side of the base housing area. Our neighbors were the Snow's and the Mitri's. Wing Commander Col. Larsen lived directely across the street. We lived on RAF Woodbridge from 09/77 - 06-79, at the southwestern most corner of the base housing area, in quarters 1400. My father was the Base Commander during this period.
My brother and I attended Woodbridge American High School during all three years of our tour. I completed grades 7-8-9 there, while my brother John completed 9-10-11. Both of us were active in school sports and Scouting.
As is surely the case with all of us, there are many friendships and fond memories which have faded over the 30 years (!) that separate then from now. Some of those with whom I've lost touch and would very much like to reconnect include...
* Chris Hofrichter (brother Mike);
* Sandy Snow (sister Michelle);
* Charlie Mitri;
* USAF pilot Frank Falsone (sp?);
* Cheryl Felton;
* Chris Sawyer (brother "Tiger");
* Lorraine Rand;
* Betty Meadows;
* Yvonne and Monty Mathews
* Lisa Schultz;
* David Goddard (brother Steve);
* Aaron Harris;
* Meg Greene;
* Caroline Rapone;
* Lito Geraldson;
* Scott Seligman;
* Jeanette and Janice Selden;
* Allison McClish;
* Chris Richard;
* Kathy Spisak;
* Mike Webber;
* Greg Gregory;
* Helena Norris;
* Nicola Pearson;
* Dale Shoope;
* Mike Spenser;
* Dee Myers;
* Brad Bond;
* Teachers: Ms. Beazley, Mr. Grover; Ms. Curran; Mr. Winzler; Coach Laut; Dr. Williams;

If anyone reading this has any news or contact information regarding any of those persons listed above, or would like to make conact with myself or my brother John Mitchell, please don't hesitate to send me an email.

Warm regards...

Douglas Mitchell

I played on the base basketball team during my 2 years there. during the my last year there we compiled an 18-2 record which I think still stands today as the best record in Bentwaters history. We had so many grat players, Hank Brown, Isadore Brown, Bones Bennett, Clayes, Jefferson, Oops Alston, Dogan just to mention a few. My first year there we were blessed with the talent of Alan Mills, perhaps the greatest player to wear a Phantom uniform. We stay in touch with each other and visit one another from time to time. Another friend I stay in touch with is Ray "poor dog" Ruffin from Beaumont, Texas. After my tenure on active duty I joined the Tenn air national guard and retired as a CMS after 27 yrs total service.

Message Looking for any old 92nd TFS Weapons Mechanics. Remember cranking in the 20 ml rounds in the gun pod? What were the bomblifters called( MJ-1/MJ-4). Hated sticking my head behind the rocket launchers to punch one out with a screwdriver when one came back stuck from a flight. TDYs were great, got to get suntans in Libya, Turkey, Spain, Italy, Sardinia, then come back to the cold in England. Wish I could do it all over again, the Queens Head pub in Saxmundham, Running Buck in Ipswich, beer on base was $2.40 a case, Bacardi Rum was $1.25 a fifth. Don't drink anymore, but sure enjoyed my youth in a fantastic country. Looking for Gary Furstenberg, Greg Treadwell, Johnny Payne, Edward Dumas, Pete Holloway.
Cheers to a great group of troops!!

Message My wife, Romelle and I, along with three daughters, loved our time in the UK. When we first arrived in 1969 we stayed in the Coach and Horses in Melton for several weeks on TLA until we moved into base housing on Woodbridge. We met folks at the Pub who became lasting friends. I was the Chief Controller at Woodbridge and worked with really great controllers, including three English civilians who were known as Native Sons. I had worked with two of these 10 years before when a very young airman at RAF Lakenheath and assigned at Anglia radar air traffic control center. A look back now, this is all ancient history and of very little interest, so cheerio.

As anyone else who had the "pleasure" of being a cop in that environment, he/she realizes that it could be hell at times, but a whole lot colder! Driving on the left side of the road for the first time, roundabouts and Morris Minors? Coin operated electric meters and needing a licence for TV. Water heaters above the sink and bathtub, and friges that bearly reached your waist? Two weeks without seeing the sun and the F-4 drivers bragging they saw it everyday. The Farmer who fertilized with Pigs ^#%$! in the field accross from the dorms on Bentwaters (pray for no wind). The freezing cold water of the north sea at Felixstow beach? Warm beer and Lager and Lime? Hamburgers made out of ham? And ice cream that was soooo good? What's not too love?

Bentwaters was my best assignment in 29 years Military Service Active/Reserve. I lived off base on a farm in Bedfield near Framlingham Castle. Very pretty place and quite peaceful. Like so many here have said. You don't really know how much you loved it until you went somewhere else, like I did to Minot, ND. I know it's progress, but it's very sad to see the place closed up and run down. I hope to hear from old friends. Cheers

Its hard to believe its been that long ago. I tell my friends that was the best time of my life. Does anybody rememerber this band call Heatwave. Anyway they opened the brand new Phamptom club. The keyboard player wrote hit songs for Mike Jackson after his group made it big. All my buddies over there had a hard time keeping up with me. I had some many women. Guys I could not handle all of them. Anyway I'm 50 now and I'm settled down. I live near Seattle which is a great place to live. If anyone would like to write please do. Does anyone remember the talent contest. My band one two year's in a row. I miss the players that were on the base. Yes I still play drums. I'll never forget that time of my life. Thank god for the U.S. airforce.

Talk about a farmers pub!) at Harrow Corner, Benhall nr Saxmundham and later in a bungalow on The Street, Crosstrees, Theberton nr. Leiston. Yes sir, lots of barbecues at our place with the Catletts, McCormacks, Hewitts, Killops, Johnsons and lots of others I can't remember. It was a great time for us and the kids. We liked the Elephant & Castle in Eyke (We called it the "Elephant's Ear") and the Ship, and others too numberous to mention or remember. If you've been to the Elephant & Castle, you might remember the ring on a string that you swung forward to swing back and hopefully hook on the post to win a pint from one of the English who thought us Yanks couldn't master such a game. Always liked the NCO club, breakfast in the AM and a beer in the PM. Played lots of darts in the "Stag Bar"... or was it a "Casual Bar" by then? In Jul 73, transferred to FTD at Lakenheath. Great tour!

When Ipswich was covered in snow at Christmas time it's like an old English postcard. Remember concerts at the Lyceum in London. While stationed at Bentwaters I visited Paris and was crossing the English Channel (with my mother that was visiting) as men first stepped on the moon. We watched it live on TV in the middle of the channel. Two ski trips to Scotland, one to the Italian Alps, a week in Malta and the trip to Paris, not bad for the pay of an E-4, which as I recall was $283/mo. No return visits yet - perhaps soon. Remember base alerts, the Klaxon going off, someone would play Country Joe and the Fish singing "Don't Ask Me I Don't Give a (a)#%$!, I'm Goin' To Viet Nam." Thanks for this wonderful Web Site

Winds kept pushing my little Mazda all over the road. Got to Eyke and saw no lights on, a first for me. Trees were down all over the place. Got to the billeting office to find all the doors locked. The midnight clerk was working with candles. Got inside and it sounded like being inside a tin can with the roof rattling. SP's told us to stay inside and to not let anybody out as the winds were gusting to over 100 mph.
As the sun came up the winds were still over 80. The first person to show up at the door was a resident from the new TLF asking when the TV was going back on!! Nobody knew that the cable TV site in northern England had been flattened! It was weeks for the cable TV company to get new equipment and get it installed. Somehow we all managed to survive to live another day. If I remember correctly with all the power off the only place to eat was Burger King. They had the only back-up generators! I think we all got tired of french toast sticks and Whoppers real quick!

What a great idea to create a site like this! I left almost exactly 30 years ago, and it all came flooding back to me. Stayed up half the night remembering all the people and events I hadn't thought of in years. I got in contact with Ted Crosby, who I hadn't seen since he drove to Kirtland AFB when I got married in 1975. I lived in Felixstowe for most of the time, first in the Toro Hotel (now a retirement home) and then at 38 Holland Road. What a great place, wonderful people, and excellent memories. Thanks for reviving those memories! I'd love to contact others who shared the experience: Jan Olson (the Eknakar guy), Glen Gilpin, Tolbert (Dwarf), Fast Eddie Harmon (no hard feelings), Hanson, Davis, Bertram Russell and any other cops or others. I have contact info for Big Daddy Manship. He's doing well in Maine.

Can't quite remember my 6th grade teacher's name, but something like Calzini? He said it meant "little boots". Also had Mr. Hanlon for English in 6th grade. Other teachers were Mrs. Nimis for social studies, Mrs. Curran for English, Coach Laut for P.E., Mr. Cohen(?) for French, and the principal was Mr. Egan. Classmates included Mario Smith, Chris Coovery, Kent Winkleseth(sp?). Went on an Outward Bound trip to Wales while in sixth grade, and also participated in a student exchange program with a British school. Our family lived in Felixstowe briefly, then moved to Melton and lived on Fern Hill Close. Neighbors included the Lombardos, the Bibbins, the Farnsworths, the Yoders(sp?), and the Harps (hey Kenny! remember Pipkins?). Any Meltonites remember the Toni Bell ice cream truck? Anyway, just saying howdy.

Message: Just wanted to add to something mentioned by Bob Pierce, in his letter. The aircraft sheet metal shops at B/W and W/B had some MoD "Civvies", as well as several other aircraft maintenance shops. These men went well beyond their normal duties as co-workers. They were mentors, trainers, friends; almost surrogate fathers, or big brothers for many young, inexperienced kids, that were new to everything about the Air Force, England, and being on our own. Many of us spent memorable Christmases and other holidays and free time with our MoD compatriots and their families. There's not a GI that worked around these men who weren't fond of them or changed by their presence. So, "CHEERS!" to Alex Trumpeter, Dick Newson, Ted Warner, Art Ives (deceased); plus Red, Percy, Mike Haas, and numerous others. You helped shape the lives and careers of a lot of young people. We haven't forgotten you, and we are grateful to you!

Subject: Joe Wilson/Steve Berta memorial

I did not know about the memorial before, but was passed this web page from some fellow 91st TFS mates.  As others have told you, Joe and Steve were Killed in an aircraft accident in Germany during a close air support training misson on a practice range near Nuringberg.  I was over there in 2000, and it is still an active range.
A slight correction to one of the other postings; We were a flight of Two, Steve and Joe were flying wing.  Capt Rusty Sellers and I (Maj Robert Krogseng) were in the lead ship.  There was a very extensive accident investigation, but the board never came up with a good cause for the accident.  (I have my own theory).  Rusty Sellers was a Fighter Weapons School graduate, and one of the best pilots I have ever flown with. (I have flown with some of the best, 8 years in the backseat of F101B's and 8 years in F4 C's, D's& E's)
Joe Wilson was my best friend at Bentwaers, and I spent many nights sitting Nuclear Alert with Steve and Joe.  Rusty Sellers later got out of the AF. and went to work for his dad who owned a Cessna Dealership in Enid OK.  Rusty was flying a charter down to the Bahama's in a Cessna 420 (?) and died in a firery crash shortly after take off. Joe Wilson's wife Marie lives in Tacoma WA, and their son and daughter live in the Seattle area. We visited Marie in 2001.
Linn, I have enjoyed your page,  I was at Bentwaters in the 91st, and as Base Operations officer from Sept 1973 to Sept 1976.  If the museum is interested, I have a copy of the Base news paper telling of the accident. I have claimed Alaska as home for the last 33 years, still fly, have a Maule M-4 210C.
Own a fishing lodge on the Kenai river see http://www.fishingalaska.net.
Thanks, Bob Krogseng

Message: I participated in the 81 TFW's transition from the F-4 to the A-10 during the late 1970s, with the 91 TFS closing out F-4 operations in mid-1979.
One of the treasures from the Phantom era was a Martin-Baker ejection seat trainer. During the heyday of F-4 operations, the seat was located with wing life support and used for ground training. As F-4 operations drew down, the 91st had the task of maintaining a bare bones flying and training program with remaining F-4 assets. To make room for the A-10s, the seat was moved to our life support section. When the 91st finally clsoed F-4 operations there was obviously no requirement for a Martin-Baker trainer. Fearing it would be tossed on the scrap pile, members of the squadron mounted it on a stand and delivered it to our on-base quarters the night of our final F-4 party. And, to my wife's great displeasure, then and still today, I still have it.
Since June 1980, the seat has been moved to nine different locations, which included two additional trips across the Atlantic, carefully disguised as a 300 pound lamp base. When I run into members of the old F-4 squadron from that time period, the first question asked is, "do you still have the ejection seat?" I promised to keep it safe, and I have.
I no longer store it in my living room as I did for years, but it's in a safe place. However, it was the greatest conversation piece ever. And I can't tell you how many non flyers I've strapped into the seat, leaving them there for sometimes several minutes wondering how to get out.
There's a bit of history to that ol' seat. If you can recall some of the "notables" who wore the 81 patch, and trained on that seat, there's a real line up.
The seat is still in great shape and looks just as good as it did when I found it in the middle of my living room in the spring of 1979.
I unwrap it occasionally and play with buckles and the straps and remember the days when it was important to know how it all worked. Luckly, I never had to use it, but perhaps a few that did got their training on this ejection seat.
And, what am I gonna do with it? I'll keep it... just like I'm supposed to.

Message: I fondly remember my first Air Force PCS at Bentwaters. I was privileged to work with some of the finest NCOs I've ever known (and some of whom I still keep in touch with. I met and married my wife in Ipswich School, left the Air Force two years later and used GI bill to earn PhD at University of Washington. Stayed in Air Force Reserve and retired as Lt Col. We raised two children and spent last 3 years back in the UK where I am a civilian psychologist at RAF Lakenheath. The 81st TFW plaque they gave me when I left hangs on my office wall. I've been back to BTW twice and brought both our children when they visited.

Sure do have a lot of good memories from BW and a great bunch of guys back then - Fred Berg, Ken Hetrick, "Jeep" Bullard, Jim Cooper, Bill Lambrich, Larky Colebrooke, Dave Thompson, George Wahr, Dave Satterfield, Ron Reeves, John Marshall, Sam Bennett, Ike Curry, "Mac" MacArthur, Rod Rodriquez, Mike Mole, Bob Bauer, Seth Cantor, Warren Wismer, Tom Dossey (did you ever get a VW bug to run on diesel fuel?!?), Bob Ramage, Tony Paludi, Nasty Carol in the Airman's Club, and soooo many others.
Fond memories of the "Elephant & Castle" in Eyke - run by Les and Ann Wallace.
Anyone remember the band "Eyes of Blond"?
How about 640901 running off the end of the runway? Those (a)#%$! TRX boxes?
Sad to see what the place has become. While I was there we saw both a new BX and a new base theatre built. Was there too early for the UFO though!!!! Where was Airman Mulder when we really needed him??

Message: I loved my 3 years assignment flying the A-10 throughout the U.K. and Europe. The only thing better than the flying was the fine hospitality of E. Anglia. I first lived in distant Laxfield, then closer to the base in Pettistree. Now as an airline pilot, I occasionally get the rare opportunity to glimpse the Bentwaters/Woodbridge complex when crossing England enroute to Amsterdam, Frankfurt or Paris.
Those early USAF years in the U.K. still warm my heart and rarely drift too far from my daily thoughts.
God bless all of those who shared those days and memories of a beautiful country, a delightful people, and a dedicated mission.

Message: Graduated from WBHS Class of 1978. Didn't really appreciate the area in my younger days but with age I can honestly say it was a great experience. Recently visited the base. It has survived better than Bentwaters. The school still stands albeit mother nature is slowly taking hold. REQUEST INFORMATION: There are two memorials near the school. One is an archway leading to the football field and bears the name of Colonel George S. Dorman Memorial Stadium 1969. The other is a wooden plaque on the Youth Center BBQ pit with the names of Major Joe Wilson jnr and Capt Steve Berta July 1974. I'm curious to learn who these officers were and the reason for the memorials. I hope that when the proposed museum at Bentwaters becomes reality that these two pieces of 'Twin Base' history are removed to the said museum. I am led to believe that this will be the case. Any information re: the above would be most appreciated.

Message: Arrived to RAF BW / WB as my first assignment (It was a preferred swap with the Phillipines). Quickly learned the mission, the skills of the trade (Aerospace Ground Equipment Repair), Then off the clock (Partied like there was no tomorrow). Really enjoyed my assignment there, (81st Field Maintenance Squadron), despite morale and other issues that existed at the time.
Discovered people called (Punk Rockers), Learned not to be deceived by the American media's interpretation of the "Mild Mannered Brit".
Met my wife there, (Of 26 years to date) in 1976. We married November that same year in Woodbridge Town. We both miss Felixstowe's carnival park, (Even the greasy donuts & that rickety old roller coaster), sitting at Bawdsey Bay while collecting sea shells and watching the sunset. Then there was just the traveling around the beautiful countryside. Running through those farmers Flower fields chasing rabbits in Spring. Watching others ride the rotating irrigation sprayers in the fields... Hmmm. "Mooning the Aircraft Spotters"... Then asking one of the girls for a date. (Oh Yeah!) Hey, I was very young back then!
Still maintain contact with some of my old co workers from that era.
The best part of being assigned there was enjoying the hospitality of the British who mutually welcomed us to their country.
It was a sad thing to find out the two bases had closed, considering the amount of expense put into the aircraft hangars. Not surprising though, because encroachment had always been a major issue during our assignment there.
Cheers to the UK, and to all who had the opportunity to enjoy the Queens Country during the 70s. It was a great era, and some day my wife and I plan to "Take A Drive" there for a visit.

Message: I often read the accounts of so many who served at Bentwaters and Woodbridge through the years and one theme is common. It was some of the best years of our lives. Doing two tours in the 81st FW (81 OMS, 92AMU, MSSQ) were so different from all our other assignments. We did one in Holland and also one at Lakenheath but the twin bases were special. Like so many others we will always remember Ipswich and Woodbridge Town and so many of the little villages and communities. In the day and age in which we all live I'm proud and blessed for the privilege I had to serve in England and in the Air Force. Retired from Langley AFB Virginia in 1999. I remember when our son Joshua was born in Apr 86 and I was in a Post Office down in Ipswich the day after we bombed Libya and very self conscious by some of the news report on the telly. The postal clerk behind the counter looked me squarely in the eyes and said, "Contrary to what you're hearing on the news, some of us Brits are (a)#%$! glad you bombed Libya!" I've never forgotten how that made me feel and I love the British people and how they treated us as guests in their beautiful country. I still work with the military at the Army Reserve Headquarters in Atlanta on Ft McPherson and my wife and are planning on a return trip soon. I'm sure it will be sad to see what has become of our home away from home. Till we meet again.

Sgt., 67 Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron

I am interested in contacting former members of the 67th ARRS who were stationed at RAF Woodbridge while I was there.
I have had some luck locating a few members of the squadron, but would like to know what became of my two squadron commanders: Col Stanley Maratos and Col. Donald Jensen.
Also trying to locate a former supervisor Lt. Minot Gailliard. Would like to share memories and photos with any of the old (and we are getting older!!) gang. The 67th was the best assignment I ever had!

2001

Gary Jackson Military History:
I enlisted in the Navy, yes the Navy, March 1964 and served in Viet Nam in 1966. In October 1966 I returned home and then transferred to the USAF. I was in the USAF from 1966 through November 1973.
I arrived Bentwaters 20 November 1969 and departed 21 October 1973, at which time I was being discharged from the service, at my request. I arrived Bentwaters as a Sgt and later made SSgt. I was assigned to the 91TFS, B-flight as a Crew Chief and worked the flight line prior to my last three months, at which time I was assigned to the 81 Security Police Squadron under "Project Transition." This was to help you find work after the service. I joined the Police Squadron because I wanted to be a police officer, which I became for a time.
My daughter was born at RAF Lakenheath, 8 December 1970. She kept her dual-citizenship until she turned 18 years of age.
Bentwaters was a very big part of my life with a lot of good memories. I am proud to say I was there.
Thanks for your help!

Arrived an A1C December 10th, 1973, to Sgt circa Aug 1975
F-4D Phantom (66-620) crewchief 81st OMS (Organizational Maintenance Squadron) Flightline Mechanic
circa Jan 75 - Aug 75 Alert Force Flightline Crewchief
Now: PO Box 36, Hinsdale, New York 14743
Stationed at Bentwaters right out of Tech School... Arrived at Crooked Creek during an ORI (Operational Readiness Inspection) Was astounded by the size of the F-4 Phantoms when first saw them.
Spent most of 2 years at Twin-Base complex working swing shift heavy maintenance (tires, flight controls, external fuel tanks)
First trainer Rick Mayer?, Flightline Chief MSgt Hand.
Best friends were "Mr. Lewis" a Staff Sgt who I enjoyed working with tremendously and had a ball driving around the perimeter in his VW Bug with dim headlights at breakneck speeds to get to midnite chow and "Smitty's Banana Pancakes....YUMMMM YUMMMM
JJ Johnson was another good friend who transferred to George AFB California after I did and was directly responsible for me getting my drivers license.
Took flying lessons from Chris Crowther? at Woodbridge Aero Club....yes, flying before I had a drivers license.
Chris returned to crop dusting after I transferred out I was told....
Loved the area and will always regret not having a car to get around. I did attend many airshows (including Farnborough) and air museums by charter bus. Only made it to London once (actually drove thru by bus) but saw Piccadilly Circus, Tower of London and Big Ben.
I was assigned to the 92nd TFS and remember "my pilot" Lt. J.C. Meyer yelling across the dispersal ramp for me when his plane had some problems. I saw him once years later at George AFB when he was getting checked out in the aging F-105. Don't think he remembered me.
I was also present the day the Queen, both Princesses and the Duke stopped at Bentwaters on their way to Ipswich to dedicate the Post Office there. Have some nice photos of them all.
Would love to converse with anyone else there in the years I was stationed there. Maybe talk about the TDY's to Aviano Italy. I have been back to Aviano 3 times with the NY Air National Guard since then and there is NOTHING the same except the Transient Alert shack.
I get so "homesick" for Bentwaters sometimes.

Ray Winn ramwin2(a)msn.com,Bentwaters/Woodbridge 1968-1978, Civilian, Member of the Tunetwisters
During this time I worked at the Dining Hall, Stars&Stripes bookstore briefly, and worked for AAFES from 1970-78.
I was the first Manager of the Bentwaters Sound Center (through the Deli, Furniture Store, all the way in the back, tall guy with glasses, that's me).
I also played lead guitar for several C&W bands.
You might remember the "Tunetwisters" at the NCO Club and the Woodbridge All-Ranks Club.
I've got many fond memories of those times. Cheers and all the best. Ray Winn.
The Tunetwisters were formed by Chuck Bailey, who was Bandleader, big daddy, organizer, mentor, leader, nursemaid, and chief Buttkicker to us all.

The other members were Chuck Conley, Chris Kallenback(sp.?), Duane Booth, Mel Tindle, Rick Welch, and me.  We occasionally were joined by Bob Haskell, Tony Smart, Ron Reed, and Pete Harvey as sidemen.

[Linn B.: I am interested that there was no mention of Clyde Clevenger, who emailed me to say that he played in a band of that name]

We did make two LP's at Hillside Records in Ipswich around 1975. I wonder if you could find out if they are still in business? I tried searching on the 'net but didn't score. It was owned and operated by Richard and David Allison at Levington Road, IPS. They were a brand new studio and I think we were their first venture. It went well.
I stayed in touch with Chuck B. for a while after I returned to US but then lost contact. It would be great to hear from any of them. It's also nice to hear from someone in Woodbridge.

Hello: I was lucky to find this web site and was pleased with the photo's of the place. I had the honor to be stationed at RAF Bentwaters in 1970 first to the APO and later to Special Services.
I enjoyed my short tour of Duty at RAF Bentwaters and found that the People I met in my hikes through the back roads and in the town of Eyke as well as Ipswich were some of the greatest people you could hope to know if you were a young person far from home and simply trying to enjoy the area.
Yes, like a lot of young Airmen, I did the London thing, however I found such locations as Clacton-on-Sea, and several other locations of greater enjoyment and more in keeping with what I could afford at the time.
I met and later married a young lady from Clacton-on Sea, who passed away several years ago. Currently, I am retired (on Disability) and may never be able to return to the Area of Bentwaters and Woodbridge, it was sad to learn that the place is no longer an active Base - would hope to hear from anyone out there who is so inclined. If anyone knows of the current address or location of Sgt. Edward Cohan, I would be most grateful to have this passed on, he was my roommate and friend during my tour.
Respectfully,
Lloyd E. Greenwood

Frank Pastizzo frankpastizzo(a)warmuptheworkplace.com
My name is Frank Pastizzo. I was a medic in the quonset hut clinics, working Emergency Room, on Bentwaters August 1976-August 1978.
I was only 18-20 years old, and did a lot of growing up then. I had a 1967 Morris Oxford and drove it all over--Badingham, Aldeburgh, Felixstowe, and over into Oxfordshire, where I had friends and family living near Upper Heyford.
I ended up living off base on Langer Road in Felixstowe, where I and my roommates frequented The North Sea Hotel. But we still liked our Tolly Cobbold Cobnut Brown Ale at The Green Man, and had quite a few pints at The Anchor in Woodbridge, too.
Is there a possible way to track former High School Students from Woodbridge High School? Cannot find a web location for former students at Woodbridge. Perhaps there are old yearbooks, etc.
I also remember the civilian ambulance drivers--John Piper, and Ray Horris, and a delightful woman by the name of Poppy who answered our phones at the clinic.
Thank you

A wooden memorial has been found on Woodbridge base, by Mark Hitch, a British Army helicopter pilot who lives on the base.   Mark and I asked if anyone had information about the unfortunate airmen mentioned on the sign, which reads

IN MEMORIAM
MAJOR JOE WILSON Jnr
CAPT STEVE BERTA
JULY 1974

memorium-wilson-berta.jpg (8844 bytes)

Responses are below, for which I and Mark Hitch are very grateful.

Raymac2835(a)aol.com
I found your site on the twin bases on the internet and found it to be very interesting. In looking at the People Search for the 1970s, there was an entry that was asking about the Memorial Plaque that was found. Joe Wilson and Steve Berta were members of the 91st TFS stationed at RAF Bentwaters and were killed in an aircraft accident (F-4) that occurred in Germany. I had rotated back to the states in early July 1974 and heard about the accident through friends.

STEVE AND JOE WERE 91TFS CREW MEMBERS. STEVE WAS A USAFA GRAD, JOE WAS HIS BACKSEATER. THEY CRASHED ON A GROUND SUPPORT EXERCISE IN GERMANY WHILE MAKING SIMULATED BOMB PASSES AT TRACKED VEHICLES. I BELIEVE STEVE WAS FLYING #3 THAT DAY IN A FOURSHIP LED BY CAPT RUSTY SELLERS. RUSTY ALSO BIT THE BIG ONE MANY YEARS LATER IN AN AIRCRAFT INCIDENT.
BOTH STEVE AND JOE WERE MARRIED. STEVE’S WIFE JO SURVIVED HIM. CAPT DICK HILL WAS THE WING’S ESCORT BACK TO THE STATES.

You had a memorial to Steve Berta and Joe Wilson on your US-UK Search Page (1970's) asking if anyone had any info on these airmen. They were assigned to the 91TFS and crewed together in the F-4 Phantom. Berta was the Aircraft Commander and Wilson, the Weapons System Officer. As is obvious from the memorial, they were killed in a crash in July 1974. I had the privilege of being in the same squadron with them. They were two of the nicest people in the world!
John Cary
